New catamaran service between Torquay and Brixham

New catamaran service between Torquay and Brixham

UK TRANSPORT company Stagecoach is planning to trial a fast ferry service.
The four-week trial will use a 138-passenger catamaran, which will carry passengers between the two destinations for a month from August 29. Stagecoach operates a bus service between the two towns but this can take up to 90 minutes during the tourist season. The crossing time by ferry will be only 15 minutes. The experiment is being organised in conjunction with Torbay Council and Stagecoach has chartered a 32 m catamaran, Red Jet 1, from ferry company Red Funnel. The catamaran will be renamed Bayfast and services will be timed to cater for commuters as well as tourists. Stagecoach staged a similar exercise in Scotland last year, providing a service between Fife and Edinburgh using a 150-passenger vessel.

“The Torbay service will also require public funding support. The trial objective is to allow us to model the potential demand for a permanent service, test the craft and operational arrangements, establish live operational costs and establish the basis on which a business case can be made. There is no magic passenger number on which we would base success,” said a spokesman.
