The automotive group Volkswagen has made its choice for its main gateways for ro-ro traffic on the Iberian Peninsula. Redefining its distribution, there will be only three gateways instead of four.
The port of Tarragona will be one of those centres and cover Catalonia and Aragón. This decision is based on the intermodal facilities of the port, since Volkswagen delivers its cars for export from its production plant in Pamplona. "The project is half maritime, half land-based," said Josep Andreu, president of the Port Authority of Tarragona, in a press conference. The diversification of the port services led to an increase in revenues of 1% in 2016 on the previous year.
Furthermore, a new container service will be launched by Medkon lines from Tarragona to Algeria and Morocco as of 4 May. Starting with a 10-day loop, the service will be transformed to a weekly one subject to customer demand.
